This document explains how to use two patching utilities to update your copy of PageMaker 5.0 to version 5.0a, which corrects several problems in PageMaker 5.0. For a list of fixes, see the section “Improvements in PageMaker 5.0a” later in this document. In addition to the patching utilities, several PageMaker components have been updated since the release of PageMaker 5.0. You can download these components from the Aldus section on CompuServe and America Online. Improved components include the Excel, RTF, and TWAIN import filters, the “Acquire image…” Addition, and certain PANTONE color libraries. Apple’s updated printer driver (version 8.1.1), called “LaserWriter 8” in the Chooser, is also available.
IMPORTANT: The following instructions explain how to use the two patching utilities to update the U.S. English or International English version of PageMaker 5.0 to version 5.0a. Note that the Canadian English version of PageMaker requires a DIFFERENT set of patching utilities, which are included in the file “CEPM5A.SEA” in the Aldus section on CompuServe and America Online. If you are unsure of which language version you own, be sure to read the section of this document entitled “To determine your language version.”
TAKE THESE PRECAUTIONS:
Failing to follow these steps can result in problems that will require you to reinstall PageMaker, any updated components, and the patching utilities.
• Quit all applications, and disable extensions.
Applications and extensions (even virus protection software) must be off while you run the patching utilities to update PageMaker. To turn off extensions on System 7, hold down Shift as you restart your computer. On System 6, move nonessential Startup and Control Panel files out of the System Folder, then restart.
• Make backup copies of the PageMaker 5.0 application file and its resource file.
PageMaker’s application file is in the PageMaker folder (named “Aldus PageMaker 5.0” by default); “PM5.0 RSRC” is in the “Aldus” folder in the “System Folder.”
• Run the patching utilities on the ORIGINAL PageMaker files.
• Run BOTH patching utilities, not just one.
One patcher updates the PageMaker 5.0 application, and the other updates the “PM5.0 RSRC” resource file. PageMaker requires both files to be updated.
• Do NOT run a patching utility more than once on the same file.
Updating the same PageMaker file twice can corrupt that file. Therefore:
— Delete the patching utilities from your hard drive after updating successfully.
— Double-check that PageMaker hasn’t been updated already. If you’re unsure whether PageMaker has been updated, select the PageMaker program icon in the Finder, and choose “Get Info” from the File menu. The “Version” field in the Get Info dialog box will read “5.0” if PageMaker has not been updated. Repeat the step with the “PM5.0 RSRC” file in the “Aldus” folder. If a file displays a version number other than 5.0, do not run the patching utility on the file.
NETWORK USERS ONLY: If you have a keyed version of PageMaker 5.0 on a network server, do not run the patching utilities on that copy. Instead, your KeyServer administrator should update PageMaker from 5.0 to 5.0a on a local computer (as described below), key the new version of PageMaker, and provide the update to you and the other PageMaker users.
1. Double-click the “Aldus PageMaker 5.0 Patch” icon in the “PageMaker 5.0a Patcher” folder.
2. Click “Patch” in the message reminding you to backup the original PageMaker 5.0 application.
3. Select the original PageMaker 5.0 application file in your PageMaker 5.0 folder (the “Aldus PageMaker 5.0” folder by default), and then click “OK.”
Wait while the patcher updates your copy of PageMaker 5.0 (this may take a few minutes).
4. Click “OK” in the confirmation message that appears.
5. Next, double-click the “PM5.0 RSRC Patch” icon.
6. Click “Patch” in the message reminding you to backup the original “PM5.0 RSRC” file.
7. Select the original “PM5.0 RSRC” file (installed in the “Aldus” folder inside your “System Folder” by default), and then click “OK."
Wait while the patcher updates PageMaker’s resource file.
8. Click “OK” in the confirmation message that appears.
After determining that the updated version of PageMaker launches and runs successfully, you can delete the backup copies of the application file and resource file, and you can delete the patching utilites.
If you are unsure of which version of PageMaker you own, look for a two-letter prefix on any serial number sticker for your original version of PageMaker. (Do not refer to the serial number that appears in the PageMaker startup screen, or in the “About PageMaker” screen, since the two-letter prefix is not part of the actual serial number and does not appear on screen.) If there are no letters before the serial number, you have a U.S. English version, and you may use the patching utilities that came with this document. If you see the prefix “IE,” “LI,” or “EI,” you have an International English version, and you may use the patching utilities that came with this document. If you see the prefix “CE,” “LC,” or “EC,” you have a Canadian English version, and you CANNOT use the utilities that came with this document. Instead, use the utilities included in the file “CEPM5A.SEA,” available in the Aldus section on CompuServe and America Online.
You can find your serial number sticker in one of these locations:
— on “Disk 2” of the PageMaker 5.0 installation disks
— on the bottom of the PageMaker box
— on the “Disk and installation guide” for PageMaker 5.0
— on the registration card flyer.
Or, if you have upgraded to PageMaker 5.0 from a previous version:
— on your original Program disk
— on the bottom of the PageMaker box
— inside the front cover of the User Manual included with your first copy of PageMaker.
• Grayscale, RGB, and CMYK TIFF images used to appear too dark when printed to certain imagesetters. TIFF images now print correctly to all imagesetters.
• Color and grayscale TIFF images used to print as black boxes with certain FAX drivers (such as the Global Village, Dove, and STF Technologies FAX drivers) and with certain QuickDraw printer drivers (such as the LaserWriter LS printer driver). Color and grayscale TIFF images now print and fax correctly using any supported FAX or QuickDraw printer driver.
• Text in publications with many EPS graphics would stop appearing on pages in a print job after a certain number of pages in the publication had been printed. Text now prints for all pages in a publication, regardless of the number of pages printed or the number of EPS graphics in the publication.
• EPS (encapsulated PostScript) graphics in publications originally created in PageMaker 3.x, converted to version 4.x, and then opened in PageMaker 5.0 used to print with low resolution or appear bitmapped because the link to the original graphic was lost in the conversion process. Link information from PageMaker 3.x publications converted in PageMaker 5.0a is retained, so EPS graphics print at the correct resolution.
• On some Macintosh computers running System 6.07, PageMaker failed to print when “Background printing” was turned on in the Chooser. With PageMaker 5.0a, all System 6.07 users will be able to print from PageMaker using background printing.
• In PageMaker 5.0, black-and-white bitmapped images (such as TIFF or MacPaint files) that were placed as inline graphics used to be assigned the “Registration” color, by default. In PageMaker 5.0a, inline black-and-white bitmap images are assigned the default color specified for the current publication. (To specify a default color, click a color in the “Colors” palette when no objects in the publication are selected.)
NOTE: You can change the color of an inline graphic at any time by selecting it with the pointer tool and clicking a color in the “Colors” palette.
